The world’s top stellarator experts left academia to establish Type One Energy
In 2019, a few colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison were chatting over drinks when they decided to form a private company and build a next-generation stellarator fusion power plant. Funds for an energy generating fusion stellarator were not available in academia, but private markets were beginning to show an interest in fusion startups.

With expertise developing and operating the HSX experiment at UW-Madison, they gathered a team of stellarator experts from around the world to form Type One Energy.

The company’s first big break came with an ARPA-E grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to begin concretely developing a fusion power plant design.
Then, in 2023, Type One Energy connected with Bill Gates-backed Breakthrough Energy Ventures and CEO Chris Mowry joined the team to turn their technical vision into a commercial reality. The company was awarded the first grants from the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Milestone Based Fusion Development and INFUSE Programs.
Since then, the company has made rapid progress on the path to commercializing the world’s first fusion energy power plant.
